Many important issues are going to or have already been discussed here today. I am going to present another issue that, in my opinion, is one of the most important issues in the world’s societies: the existence of capital punishment. Fortunately, most of the world is moving toward complete rejection of the death penalty. But as country after country abolishes this practice, the United States of America continues to ignore this international trend. Capital punishment automatically takes away the human rights from the people, but, ironically, the United States considers itself the standard bearer of human rights. The question is, how many more people will be put to death by a government that considers itself the standard bearer of human rights? The answer to this question will determine the rest of the world’s attitude toward the United States. It will determine the level of civility in the world’s societies.
