Comparison of Rationalists, Empiricists, and Continental Philosophers Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The philosophers John Locke and David Hume are both empiricists. They generally share the belief that knowledge is attained exclusively through experience and that people are born without any knowledge whatsoever. Both believe that the only firm base of knowledge is from observation. These two would break the observations of things into simple or complex ideas. Locke’s two roots of knowledge are observations about external sensible objects, which he calls sensation. Observations about the internal operations of one’s mind is called reflection. Reflection was taking notice of the mind’s operation or watching ourselves watching the world. Back to the simple and complex observations, Locke and Hume both believed that complex ideas are made up of plenty of simple ones. Hume also has observations of his own that go further than Locke’s ideas. In general, the "idea" of Hume corresponds to the "complex idea" of Locke, and "impression" to Locke's "simple idea."
