“The Urban Teacher Struggle” by, Lisa Renfro, was published October, 1, 2003 in volume 11, issue 2 of Teaching Music. The article speaks of the struggles of being a teacher in the under funded and often forgotten subject of music. The unique struggles of teaching music in low income urban and rural areas are discussed by teachers in different parts of the country. I believe music in education is essential to our children. Music is a harmonious way to beak up the monotony of the school day.
The article begins with Janet Underwood, an urban Chicago teacher, telling of her revelation as a new music teacher in 1964. She was “given a few tattered music textbooks and an ancient piano” (Renfro 1). She only lasted one semester at her first school but, has stuck with the profession for over thirty years.
