Boys and Girls is a very well written short story. Told through the eyes of a young girl, Boys and Girls tells her story of growing up female on a small farm in the 40s-50s.
There are many reasons that this story is well written. Character development is a major factor in this story. The narrator, the girl, is both round and dynamic. The author describes her and her feelings very well. The girl also changes greatly by the end of the story. In the beginning of the story, the girl feels as if she is equal to her father and works better with him on the farm than with her mother in the house. As the story goes on, she begins to see another side of the work her father does and slowly begins to see what is expected of her. She eventually accepts the fate of a normal woman. The narrators mother is round and static. She is well described and illustrated, but she does not undergo significant changes throughout the story. The father is a dynamic character.
