Lord of the Flies by William Golding: Why do things break up like they do? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

At first, within the society in Lord of the Flies, there are law and order, however, because of many aspects of the human nature, including savagery and fear, things begin to “break-up” and eventually causes failure of the society on the island. Slowly, the voice of reason, represented by Piggy, is taken over by fun and savagery ; the human goodness and conscience, represented by Simon, is not listened to, and taken over by the evil of human nature, represented by Roger ; while civilisation, law and order, represented by Ralph, is taken over by irresponsibility. From the beginning, the boys, especially Ralph and Piggy, attempt to set up an organised and democratic society; throughout the novel there is a struggle between the good side and bad side of human nature. The boys were affected by fear within their minds, and the desire to have fun took over their sense of responsibilities. Unfortunately anarchy defeats order, and the society in Lord of the Flies failed, due to a combination of various factors.
