In the Elizabethan era, people believed in spirits of the dead and ghosts that walk the Earth. Sons also had an obligation to the family to maintain the family honour. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a tragic and bloody play in which only two of the main characters remain alive at the end. The story tells of a young man named Hamlet who has been given the duty to avenge his father’s death. Hamlet has been confronted by his father’s ghost and is told that he was murdered by his brother Claudius, the current King of Denmark. At first we are positioned to admire Claudius, but as the story progresses we are exposed to his true self – a power-hungry, scheming, evil and murderous villain. Hamlet may inadvertently cause the deaths of a few men and women because of his equivocation but his delay in deciding to act was justified. Further more, to equivocate is not a villainous act.
