Interpretation of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”
I remember first reading this story as a sophomore in high school. I remember thinking that it would be about someone winning “The Lottery” and what they were planning on doing with their winnings. Boy was I wrong! As I reread the story, I noticed how the author uses the setting of the story “fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming and the grass was richly green” (Kennedy 263) to deter the reader. We imagine a quaint village with woman cooking and children playing, we know nothing of looming darkness about to fall.
In reading the story I felt eager to see if I had missed something the first time. I wondered if perhaps there was some kind of reason behind the lottery besides it being “tradition.” I wondered why after all of these years they still went along with something so hurtful and demeaning. My questions were not answered, though, because there were no reasons.
