Napoleon Bonaparte was a great military leader. He helped shape France into the nation it is today. His Code Law is still the basis of law in Europe today. Napoleon reformed the education system in France. He wanted the citizens to be good and loyal. The new system included primary schools, secondary schools, technical training schools, and colleges. The University of France was created to supervise all schools and license teachers. The government chose what books would be used and what ideas would be taught. Schools would teach military values and the importance of being obedient. All schools were now under the supervision of the state. State funds went only to specialized schools, secondary schools with programs for promising students and for sons of officials. The other secondary schools and primary schools had to depend on funds from local or private agencies. Most of the population did not get a very good education.
