Pearl Harbor Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“Yesterday, December 7, 1941, a date that will live in infamy, the United States was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” This quote was made by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt twenty-four hours after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The purpose of my research paper is to tell what happened during this attack. Also, why it happened and what the results were. Oahu is one of the Hawaiian Islands, which in 1941 was a U.S. Territory. Hawaiians called Pearl Harbor “Wai Momi” or “Pearl Waters” because of the pearl oysters that once thrived there. The natural sheltered bay at the southern end of Oahu made an excellent naval harbor. In May 1940, President Roosevelt had moved the main base of the U.S. fleet from southern California to Pearl Harbor. (Tanaka 6) The U.S.S. Arizona was one of seven giant battleships docked there. The others were the Nevada, Tennessee, West Virginia, Maryland, Oklahoma, and the California. The sailors called this line of ships “Battleship Row”. (Stein 3, 8) For several years be......
