God�s Grace is Hard to Find The dead silence of the rural countryside is abruptly broken by �a piercing scream from the woods, followed closely by a pistol report� (O�Connor 402). Along a dusty dirt road, crumpled at the bottom of a ditch, a grief-stricken grandmother begs the murderer to repent and spare her life; instead she receives three gunshots to the chest. In addition to the stereotypical idea of superhuman heroes, mortal, everyday heroes exist in the most uncommon places. The grandmother in �A Good Man is Hard to Find� is actually a hero rather than simply a victim because she encompasses religious faith and bravery, allowing her to see humanity in the misfit and she dies in a state of grace. The character of grandmother in O�Connor�s work is often portrayed as a pushy and selfish old woman. Even though her son, Bailey, does not want to take a detour to find the plantation his mother describes, he does anyway because she nags him until he has no choice but to do as she says.
