The industrial boom that came after the American Civil war gave many ordinary families wealth and a chance to go to other countries, most especially in Europe, to travel and familiarize themselves with foreign cultures. Such was the case of the Millers in Henry James’ story, Daisy Miller. Daisy Miller traveled around Europe with her mother, her little brother, and a courier. Being born and bred in Schenectady, New York, she was unaware of the customs, manners, and social codes of the Europeans. She was really a fish out of the water, just a young American woman in a foreign land, and that was what ultimately brought Daisy Miller to her tragic end. Daisy Miller was just too different from what European elite society considered as normal. She agreed to go to a trip to the Chateau de Chillon alone with Mr. Winterbourne even if she has only met him. She even invited him to go rowing at eleven in the evening.
