There are many different kinds of mutations that can occur, some that are genetic and some that are not. A mutation is a change in the code of someone�s DNA, sometimes causing disruptions while other times having a positive effect. Some mutations won�t do anything, which is called a silent mutation. Exposure to mutagenic agents can also cause mutations, which aren�t genetic and are called induced mutations. Chemicals, cosmic rays and radiation are some elements that can cause mutagenic mutations. Ultraviolet radiation (UV light) given off by the sun, can cause certain mutations in the skin cells. Prolonged exposure to certain UV rays is a major and preventable cause of mutations in skin cells, causing melanoma or non-melanoma (basal and squamous cell carcinoma). The sun gives of two kinds of ultraviolet radiation, UV-A and UV-B, which causes sunburns. As the ozone layer that surrounds the Earth gets smaller, it allows more and more UV light to penetrate it, making it more dangerous to stay outside for long periods of time in the sun.
