Within the aesthetic contemplations of both Augustine and Schopenhauer, the concept of detachment, or denial of the outside world is addressed. In comparing and contrasting these two views, we see that both philosophers have conceptualized and brought heavy importance to beauty through detachment. For Augustine, the very notion of beauty held religious and spiritual meaning. The purpose of art was to bring us nearer to God; through the artist, God�s power was reflected, and the spirit of man was brought closer to divinity. This was achieved by complete detachment from worldly or bodily things. For Augustine, this was the ultimate goal of art; to bring the human mind�and soul�away from the distractions of the world (Hofstadter 195). Augustine saw art as a vessel; as having a higher spiritual purpose, to convey the nature of God and in doing so, giving the soul an example to follow, bringing it closer to heaven. In order for art, and consequently the soul to be god-like, Augustine stresses the importance of reason. In De Ordine, Chapter Eleven, he says �Reason is a mental operation......
