A Leader Gone to Demise There were many kings and emperors during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries but one in particular stood out to me, Louis XIV. During his reign over France, he carried into effect a political theory of pure despotism. Louis referred himself as “L’Etat, c’est moi”, which means “I am the state”, and “implies that the absolute monarch temporarily incarnated a symbolic reality that transcended his mortal person” (Caplan 17). While France was constantly changing, so were the social, economical, and political issues. Louis XIV helped to change France, but later his own greediness for power would bring his kingdom to the verge of ruin. Louis XIV reined from 1654 to 1715, and born at Saint-Germain on August 26, 1638. His mother was Anne of Austria whose father was Philip III of Spain and Louis father was the grandson of Henry of Navarre. Louis’s father died May 14, 1643, and Louis became nominally king of France at the age of five. Since Louis XIV was not yet the formal king of France, his mother became regent and power passed to an Italian diplomat Giulio Ma......
