In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the protagonists grow mentally as they face different situations and are exposed to the real world. Throughout the novel, Harper Lee explores how the protagonists; Scout and Jem learn and change through their experiences which they are faced with throughout their day to day lives. Jem started out as an adventurous child but throughout the novel, events occurred which changed his personality from immature to mature. Mrs Dubose, an ill mannered, elderly lady was loathed by both Jem and Scout; nevertheless Jem’s experience with her was a learning one. There was not one day that passed by that Jem and Scout did not only have to walk past Mr Dubose’s house but cop all her insults too. This was part of their day to day routine, until Mrs Dubose really hit the nail on the head with her insults; she made a crude remark about Atticus. This changed Jem’s way of ‘acting like a gentleman’ as his father would say, her provocative remark caused Jem to burst and destroy her flowers. Jem hated every minute of his punishment; reading to Mrs Dubose for two hours......
