As youth liaison officer of the finance department of the Queensland state government I bring the boards attention the issue of youth unemployment and its effect on our economy. Youth unemployment can be termed as a waste of an important national resource. Youths are supposed to have the most up to date skills needed in a technologically fast moving economy. In a nation that considers it essential to retain skills inside the country it is ironic that so many capable and enthusiastic youths are now unemployed. Youth Unemployment is something that is relevant to almost all teenagers. For the majority of people there will be several times in their lives when they will be unemployed, probably at least twice before they are 24, for longer than four months. Over the last 15 years the percentage of unemployed youths has been higher than the percentage of unemployment in the general population. In 1994 the youth unemployment rate was 17% compared to the general population unemployment rate of 10%. 1. A.
