Hirohito was born in Tokyo in 1901 and died in 1989. He was the one hundred twentyforth emperor of direct lineage of Japan. He, like all emperors before him, was consisdered to be almost a god. His reign was known as the Showa era and lasted from 1926 until his death, although the last forty-two years of his reign consisted only as a figure-head and he had no political power. This was due to imperial messages that declared the Emperor to be a mortal, and the constitution of 1947 which gave political power to the people. The Showa era brought about the most dramatic changes to have ever taken place in Japan. It was during Hirohito's reign that Japan went from being a strong military bully to being one of the world's three greatest economic powers. He went to Alaska in 1971 to meet President Nixon and then went on to tour western Europe. This was the first time a reigning Emperor had traveled outside Japan.
