Photosynthesis is the complete series of chemical reactions in which the energy of light is used to synthesize high-energy organic molecules from low-energy inorganic molecules. The simplest overall chemical reaction for photosynthesis is: 6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 or carbon dioxide + water + light energy ---> glucose + oxygen + water Green plants are the only organisms that manufacture their own food. This process is called photosynthesis and begins when light strikes the plant's leaves. The leaves of most land plants are adapted to the demands of photosynthesis. The large amount of surface area on the leaves is beneficial because it gives the sun more room to hit the leaves and their thinness ensures that the sunlight can penetrate them to reach the chloroplasts inside. Chloroplasts are cells in the plant's leaves; they contain a green pigment called chlorophyll which interacts with sunlight to split the water in the plant into its basic components.
