Pleasure and Virtue: A Contrasive Analysis of Hedonists’ and Cynics’ Theories of Happiness Hedonism and Cynicism are among the oldest and most recognized schools of thought. The philosophy of Hedonism (from the Greek word “pleasure”) declares that “pleasure is the highest good in life” (Russo 1); while Cynicism (from the Greek word “dog”) values self-sufficiency and being virtuous. Although both originate from Ancient Greece and arrive on the scene after Aristotle, these eminent ethical systems dispute in several points: Hedonists assert that pleasure is the only good and they do not identify which values to pursue; Cynics had a disregard for pleasure and claim that virtue is sufficient for happiness. Accordingly, Hedonism suggests felicity in contrast with Cynicism’s pledge of an ultimate happiness. Despite being students of Socrates, both Aristippus (founder of Hedonism) and Antisthenes (founder of Cynicism) deduced discrete ideas about pleasure.
