Mrs. Mallard in The Story of an Hour Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Mrs. Mallard Kate Chopin’s short story, “The Story of an Hour,” examines a woman’s reaction to her husband’s unexpected death and rebirth. Mrs. Mallard is described in paragraph eight as “young, with a fair calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength.” The action in the story revolves mainly around Mrs. Mallard’s preservation Mrs. Mallard suffers in medical and marital conditions but most of all, poses a threat to herself as her sister Josephine proves. Everything is devised to save her from any sudden or extreme misery. The resulting situation is what ends up killing her because this precaution was not taken. Mrs. Mallard’s marriage epitomizes the status of women in early twentieth century in that women are subject to men’s power and have to conform to the role of house wife and complete obedience to their husband. Mrs. Mallard has simply grown accustomed to her husband and remains with him solely because it is comfortable and habit. She feels like marriage has tied her down and not let her live and express herself and she finally realizes this when s......
