Huckleberry Finn’s Development into Adulthood Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The education novel, or Bildungsroman as it is commonly known, is a sub- genre of fictional literature in which the main character is attempting to make some type of growth. In some cases, the story will follow its protagonist from childhood until maturity is reached. Evidently in Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the novel fits into this genre because it depicts an individual’s journey. Huck’s journey through life experiences ultimately leads into his self-development and maturation. In a sense this journey also finds Huck in search of a role model, as he is unsure of what mature behavior is. In the aftermath of his journey, Huck comes to the conclusion that he should follow his own ideas of adult behavior rather than those of others in society. Children, while often seeming to be gullible, are actually just highly impressionable. In other words, they will believe things they hear, and even mimic the behavior of older individuals, as they are striving to fit in.
