The rebellion of Bernard, Helmholtz and John the Savage are a result of their respective society’s relationship with the natural world and its rhythms, and is communicated to us through the language of their respective worlds.
The rebellion of Bernard Marx is the first of Brave New World in chronological terms and also represents the least fulfilled in the novel. Bernard’s rebellion involves a lot of social dysfunctionality, rather than true rebellious behaviors. He refuses to buy into hypnopaedic repetitions that are regurgitated by Lenina, always replying to her repetition of such phrases with the number of repetitions that an incipient Brave New Worlder would hear during their conditioning phase. When Lenina states that “Everyone’s happy now”, it is clearly not the case with Bernard, who is rather unhappy and looking for change. When Bernard wishes to discuss his ideas with Lenina, she can not understand why anyone would wish to have ideas she finds that quality as well as Bernard himself “Odd, odd, odd”.
