Sandi Randall CEEP 361 3-30-06 Research Paper Autism Spectrum Disorders Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder that affects the way a person communicates and relates to people around them. According to the Autism Society of America, autism is a severely incapacitating lifelong developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. It occurs in approximately 15 out of every 10,000 births and is four times more common in boys than girls.(Autism Resources). It has been found throughout the world in families of all racial, ethnic and social backgrounds. �No known factors in the psychological environment of a child have been shown to cause autism� (Autism Resources). Recent studies show that an estimated one in every 500 children is affected with one of five disorders that are referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorders.
