Short Review of First Half Of Candide Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The book Candide by Voltaire is a very interesting look at his time in history. Voltaire can be compared to a Michael Moore of today because he took on major issues facing Europe at the time such as religion and would research them in depth. He angered many people during his time and was continuously banned from countries because of his outspoken view. Candide is no exception to his outspoken demeanor and I would like to talk about the idea that everything happens for a reason, the idea that religion is looking out for the best of mankind, and the idea that everything must be good in life because of a higher being. The idea that using philosophical arguments rather than reason is mocked in Candide by using the character Pangloss. Pangloss is a learned man with Candide as his pupil. The thinking of their time was that God was perfect and anything this being created must be perfect. By this reasoning, you could not question things that happen in life because God had planned them. Using reason was a human idea, but as what we have learned from earlier books, reason can only get......
