The Cold War was the economic struggle between the two superpowers, the Soviet Union, also called the USSR, and the United States of America, which were supported by their allies. It lasted over four decades, from 1947, near the end of World War 2, until the collapse of the USSR in 1991. The war was called the Cold War because it did not involve any direct armed conflicts between the two superpowers. The Cold War was instead waged by means of strategies, economic pressures, selective aid, intimidation, propaganda, assassination and small scale military operations. The Cold War also simultaneously witnessed the largest arms race in history, leading to fears of a potential nuclear war which could wipe out mankind. All of this started in 1945 when the three superpowers leaders, Joseph Stalin of the USSR, Franklin Roosevelt preceded by Harry Truman of America and Winston Churchill of Great Britain, held two conferences one at Yalta in February and one in Potsdam in July.
