Fight Club’s Consumption and Civilization Connection Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Throughout the text of Fight Club, the author asserts several concepts and themes that drive the action of the story and motivate the characters. Many of these themes are interwoven and connect to each other in different ways. The concept of consumer society and the concept of the individuals conflict with civilization are particularly interconnected in the story. They are a lateral web that progresses as the story moves forward, often paralleling each other and sometimes replacing each other. Fight Club makes the argument that consumption drives modern society, and at times, consumption is modern society. Also, the individual is not only opposed to civilization, but also to consumption, especially when that consumption defines the individuals identity. One of Fight Clubs most important themes is the narrators relationship towards civilization. The first place the reader is exposed to this theme is when the narrator explains his work.
