‘A Taste of Honey’, written by Shelagh Delaney (at the young age of 18), was first preformed in 1958 and filmed in 1962. Commonly known as a ‘kitchen sink drama, it is strikingly different from the ‘safe’ plays written at the time, as it shows life as it really was for many people in and around Salford (near Manchester), who lived in slums. In addition to this, it shows the poor quality of housing and the lack of opportunities available for a good future, which plagued the lives of many people. Also, the characters are natural and genuine – you can believe in them. The play was written in order to shock, amuse and teach the audience. It does all of this to a high standard and at the same time it manages to break convention – it opens up people’s minds to what is really happening and that its all around them. The Ancient Greeks believed that a play had to be realistic and to be realistic the action of the play had to have one setting.
