Surrealism or magic realism is a style of art that captures the essence of a painting by faithfully portraying its exterior. Two artists, Edward Hopper and George Tooker, both have a painting that captures the essence or spirit of urban America. �Nighthawks� by Hopper and �The Subway� by Tooker has given us a view of American culture by portraying the loneliness and mood of life in large cities. �Nighthawks� and �The Subway� are prime examples of surrealism, but �Nighthawks� is a superior painting due to Hopper�s attention to detail. Edward Hopper uses an all-night diner as his setting in �Nighthawks.� In the painting he introduces us to four people in a diner: three patrons and a worker. Outside, the diner is dark and the street is empty. The only light illuminating the side of the building across from the diner is emanating from within the diner. The inside of the diner is warm, bright and welcoming. Behind the counter, a diner worker is attending to his duties but is still attentive to his customers.
