I found one of the most interesting characters that I’ve read about so far in the book Backpacking through literature, in the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by: Catherine Perkins Gilman. In the story the reader is introduced to the wife, a woman with postpartum depression who feels that she is not listened to, she’s treated as a child, and at times she feels trapped. I know many people, women especially, that would be able to relate to this woman.
The wife in the story is married to a doctor, John, who doesn’t believe she’s sick and just humors her. He decides to take her to a colonial estate for the summer so she can get the rest and air that she needs. He doesn’t really listen to his wife when she tells him how she feels. He feels that in the estate she is doing much better and as she explains to him how she feels that she isn’t getting better he just says out loud to her, in a sarcastic tone “Bless her little heart!
