Macbeth - Theme Analysis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

THEME ANALYSIS: “Fair is foul, and foul is fair” is a paradox that recurs throughout the play, “MACBETH” by William Shakespeare. The quoted phrase, “fair is foul and foul is fair” is used frequently and the phrase itself is an oxymoron, that is, a rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined. It is also a prophecy, where one thing is somehow the same as like another or about how things will change through the story. It actually shows the internal conflict that is going on throughout the play between the good and the evil. In my opinion, the reason that Shakespeare uses this as the major theme of the play is to show an emphasis on the difference between “fair” and “foul” according to the view of each different character of the play, the audience, and the reality. The quote from the three witches, "Fair is foul, and foul is fair," echoes throughout the play, and is the base of the many events that occur between and amongst the characters and their positions. Macbeth's opening line enforces this theme with, "So foul and fair a day I have not yet ......
