The Use of Ehtanol as an Alternative Fuel Within the last decade the use of ethanol as an alternative to fossil fuels has greatly decreased pollution. Ethanol is a liquid gas that is the breakdown of starches and sugars from plants such as wheat, corn, and fruit and vegetable waste. Ethanol burns cleaner, is easily replenished, and comes right from American soil. Ethanol also reduces the chance for global warming, which can lead to other major problems in the world. The government should look to expand alternative fuel research. The effects of ethanol on the environment are more positive than those of regular gasoline. The reason for this positive effect on the environment is because ethanol burns better because of the oxygen content. Studies show that ethanol blends reduce the amount of emissions by 25% to 30% and that manufacturing and burning ethanol blends do not increase the chance of the depletion of the o-zone layer.
