Excavating Truth
Nestled in an estate near Woodbridge, Suffolk, England, is an Anglo-Saxon cemetery called Sutton Hoo. The word “hoo” means spur of a hill, which appropriately identifies the several burial mounds located on the property. Positioned on the eastern bank of the River Deben, Sutton Hoo is also the site of an early 7th century ship burial. It is one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries in England. The ship contained both rare artifacts and priceless historical importance.
The burial mounds were first discovered, and presumably plundered, around 1600. However, the first legitimate archaeological investigation did not get underway until 1939. Land owner Edith May Pretty and archeologist, Basil Brown, began to unearth the mounds. They were able to infer from the artifacts they found, that the site was an Anglo-Saxon burial ground. There are many burials at the site, however, “Sutton Hoo”, commonly refers to the ship uncovered in mound 1.
