Buddhism arrived in China at a time when Confucianism and Taoism dominated the religious landscape of the country. The form of Buddhist practice that initially arrived in China was subjected to much change as a result of a need to adapt to a unique cultural context. ‘As soon as the Buddhist monk made his appearance on the Chinese scene in the Han Dynasty, he was confronted with a politico-religious system known as Confucianism’ . The importance that the Confucian system placed upon the family and Emperor conflicted directly with features of Buddhism such as monasticism and the pursuit of individual spiritual enlightenment. Buddhism became closely (and somewhat inaccurately) linked with the Chinese doctrine of Taoism during its introduction to the country. Ideas such as the Buddhist concept of emptiness were continually mistakenly likened to Taoist ideas (although as Buddhism grew in popularity these mistakes were some what rectified through the emergence of new and less confusing terminology).
