Beowulf In the epic poem "Beowulf", Beowulf is the hero. He shows that he is a great man by always putting other people�s needs before his own needs. He is important and needed by the Geats to help defended their village. Before Beowulf arrives at Geatland, there are many tales of Beowulf having the strength of thirty in the grip of each hand (Abrams, p. 35 line 380). By Beowulf coming to Geatland to fight Grendel, he is showing his need to put others before himself. The battle against Grendel is the first time we see Beowulf as a courageous and powerful hero. Beowulf was ready for Grendel�s attack on the town. When Grendel arrives, he realizes that Grendel had no knowledge of weapons and decides to fights him in a hand to hand battle. Grendel found himself in handgrip harder than ever before (Abrams page 42 line 750). Grendel had never been beaten like this before. He was desperate to flee to his den and hide for all his days (Abrams page 42 line 754). This fight helped to prove his strength and helped him gain a win against the monster.
