The Old Man and the Sea: A Hero's Pride Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Old Man and the Sea is a story of an epic struggle between Santiago, an old man, and a giant marlin. Santiago is a very old Cuban fisherman who has been unable to catch a fish for eighty four days. He has a very young apprentice named Manolin, who absolutely adores the old man. Manolin is always bringing Santiago food and fishing supplies. He used to go on fishing trips with Santiago but his parents told him he couldn’t go anymore because his boat is unlucky. Manolin will do whatever it takes to keep Santiago fishing; these two have a very strong bond, almost like father and son. This story deals a lot with pride. Santiago needs pride in order to set out on this journey and complete it. But, he also earns a newfound pride after the story ends. His story, the struggle of catching the biggest fish ever, will live on always through Manolin. Sometimes pride is viewed as a bad quality, but Santiago had good pride, a pride in himself, and this was a great quality.
