The issue of the multiple kingdoms, 1558-1642 The multiple kingdoms of England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland played a large part in events which took place during the period 1558-1642. Before this time, England had followed a policy which is known today as 'medieval imperialism', successfully conquering Wales and claiming lordship of Scotland, Ireland and France, none of which were very successful. Consequently, Elizabeth faced several problems in Ireland as a result of the actions of her predecessor Mary Tudor, especially those issues concerning plantation. Consequently, Irish affairs had a huge impact on England, namely the costs involved in conquering the country. In her dealings with Scotland, however, Elizabeth needed to be more cautious � the French Catholics were in control, and Mary Queen of Scots posed an even bigger danger.
