INTRODUCTION High-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel will be sealed away permanently and confidently in Yucca Mountain�s deep geological repository if the DOE continues to successfully state their case. There are many advantages and disadvantages to a permanent deep geological repository; however, it�s advantages far exceed those of any alternative method of disposal. Furthermore, Yucca Mountain is the closest the United States has ever come to a permanent disposal plan for radioactive wastes. A permanent disposal plan is necessary in order to ensure that the waste would not fall into untrustworthy hands in cases of terrorism or the fall of the United States government over the next 10,000 years. The alternative methods considered with most detail are waste burial, shooting the waste into space, injecting the waste in liquid form, and non-permanent deep storage in laboratories.
