Monitoring Rates Aim: Would time affect the production of hydrogen gas in the reaction between 1 M of Hydrochloric acid and 2cm long Magnesium ribbons? What would happen in the rate of reaction over time? Hypothesis: Result will show the increase in the amount of H2 (hydrogen gas) produced over time. The reaction would be fastest (rate) in the beginning. However the rate would become progressively less because the reactants would be used up and the reaction slows down. There would be a point where the reaction stops. This will be shown as a horizontal line in the graph at the end of it. This indicates that the rate of reaction has become zero because one of the reactants is used up. Variables Independent: Time periods in seconds (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70) Dependent: Amount of hydrogen gas (H2) produced. (This was measured by the amount of water went out from the boiling tube connected measuring cylinder. And the boiling tube was fully filled with water). Fixed: -Concentration of hydrochloric acid (HCl 1M) -Amount of HCl (10mL) -Length of magnesium ribbon......
