Water Birth - Alternative Bitthing Methods Water birthing is an alternate method of birthing that involves the immersion of the mother into a pool of water prior to giving birth. During a water birth, a tub is first filled with water between 95 and 100 degrees that's clean enough to drink. (Harper, 1988) The pool should be large enough for the mother to be able to sit or kneel comfortably. A midwife should always be in attendance so that should there be any sign of danger she is able to respond to the needs of the mother or baby immediately. (Harper, 1988) Once the mother begins labor she is immersed into the warm pool. The midwife monitors the mother as she continues to labor. If the mother requires special intravenous medications, in most cases they can be administered while the mother remains in the tub. (Harper, 1988) Throughout the entire labor and ultimate birth the baby is constantly monitored using a special underwater Doppler device.
