In the past, the United States government has done a lot for its citizens. And though the government has done plenty to help this country, sometimes they have overdone things. For example, in 1917, Congress passed a very controversial act relating to freedom of speech. Congress had passed the “Espionage Act which was used to shut down German language newspapers ran by German Americans in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Minnesota” (Blumner n. pag). Although the courts knew it was unconstitutional, they knew it had no sympathy for claims by publishers prosecuted under the Espionage Act, that they were victims of First Amendment violations (Blumner n. pag). Also, because the government has gone too far with censorship of what people can say, more and more college professors have to censor themselves for fear of being charged with malignant heresy (Hentoff n. pag). If college professors are not allowed to teach their students how they needed to be taught in fear of being charged, then the amount of knowledge that the students could contain is downgraded as they cannot be taught regul......
