The Greek Philosophy of Love Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Greeks had it all figured out. Love, for them, was separated into three different and specific categories. English speakers are unable to define love as well as the Greeks, and therefore, confused English-speakers undergo painful confusion in romantic relationships still today. Philia, eros, and agape are the three types of love defined by the ancient Greeks which should be better understood and incorporated into the English language. Love, after all, has many different meanings in English, but the Greeks refused to speak so ambiguously.
Philia is the philosophy of loyalty and appreciation. It is a mild fondness for one another, and nothing more. This concept remains in the category of love because, for the Greeks, philia involved a motivated loyalty—one member of the relationship respected the character of the other member, but if one member changed, so did the relationship. Philia gives us some words in English to better understand relationships based on such a love: fraternity, friendship, and family.
