Methamphetamine accounts for almost 90 percent of all drug cases in the Midwest, and is most common in Oklahoma. In Oklahoma, medical examiner�s office reports the amount of deaths testing positive for methamphetamine has been larger than cocaine for the past three years. In 2003 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the percent of adult male arrestees that tested positive for methamphetamine was over 40 percent, Phoenix, Arizona, 38 percent, and San Diego, California, 36 percent. In 2004, a study showed that 6.2 percent of high school seniors had used methamphetamine at least once. Amphetamine was created in 1887 in Germany. There was no specific disease in need for this drug and was not used until the late 1920�s. It was used as treatment for just about everything from depression to decongestion. By the 1930�s amphetamine was named Benzedrine as an over-the-counter inhaler for nasal congestion.
