In the 19th Century in New York City prostitution dominated the landscape. The commercialization of sex escalated greatly during this period because of many diverse factors. The factors include economic opportunities, poverty, and political ties. But prostitution was truly kept alive in New York City by the many people involved in the trade. These people came from all walks of like and included pimps, sporting men, police officers, politicians, and the prostitutes themselves. These major players in the sex trade helped not to just protect prostitution but also facilitate it. What first caused prostitution in the late 18th Century was the rise of industrialization. Soon small farms were being sold in the north to accommodate new ways of making a living. Soon women and girls left the country for the cities to make a living in its factories. There were little ways to avoid poverty in the cities because of the low wage work available to women there.
