Gangs in Jail Today many people who are arrested and incarcerated and are affiliated with a gang go to prison, and usually the same jail around that area. This causes one of the biggest problems in prison violence today. There are many cases and articles stating problems between rival gangs in many prisons. Our problem is how do we fix this problem? Gangs have been around forever, and members have been getting arrested ever since the beginning of gang formation. Prisons are forced to deal with these problems every day, and it is not an easy task. More than a week of rioting at six separate jails in Southern California left hundreds of inmates injured, dozens hospitalized, and one dead in February of 2005. In Southern California more than 2,000 inmates of the 21,000 inmate jail system have been involved in rioting, with as many as 500 fighting at one time. Such weapons as pepper balls, tear gas, sting ball grenades, and rubber bullets are used to halt the rioting. The use of force in prisons has tripled from 2004 to 2005.
