Harlem Renaissance Music By: Reuben Marshall The Harlem Renaissance was an explosion of literature particularly music, art and poetry during the 1920’s. Popular musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington were all associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Even though they didn’t share a common purpose they talked about black life from a black perspective and stressed the need for African pride and heritage. The Harlem Renaissance is considered by many to be the climax in African American literature (uta.edu).The Harlem Renaissance was an influential time period in which Music was used as a cultural inspiration for many artist writers and future musicians. Many African American moved to the North during the great migration in search of social and economic freedom. According to Stanley K. Schultz, between 300,000 and 1,000,000 African-Americans moved north during this period.
