The House of the Spirits, written by Isabel Allende, is an astonishing novel, which is set in a South American country during the turn of the century. The House of the Spirits is classified as a magical realism, but it can also be considered as an action book, and many critics even call it a romance. Being a romance, one of the main themes is love. There is more than one issue involving the theme of love. This paper will focus on the forbidden loves occurring in the story. The House of the Spirits tells about both rich, respected people and poor, simple peasants at a time when these two classes were very separated, and therefore forbidden to fall in love. Blanca Trueba and Pedro Tercero Garc�a probably have the most forbidden love. Other such relationships in the House of the Spirits include Alba and Jaime, Amanda and Jaime, and Clara and F�rula.
