What is asthma? Asthma, is a chronic lung disease characterized by periods of breathlessness, wheezing, and coughing. People with asthma suffer from chronic inflammation of the bronchi. The inflamed airways react to irritation by swelling, constricting, and filling with mucus. These changes obstruct airflow. An asthmatic person may feel short of breath or experience difficulty in breathing. Severe attacks may involve spasms of the airways, causing sufferers to gasp for air and feel that they are suffocating. These attacks require immediate medical attention and can cause death. Why do people get asthma? Scientists don't yet fully understand why people of all ages develop asthma, but there is a large amount of research being undertaken around the world to answer the question "why"? We do know that there is often a history of asthma, eczema or hay fever in the family. We also know that exposure to cigarette smoke during pregnancy and early childhood significantly increases the risk of children developing asthma.
