Kate Chopin was �never a feminist in the dictionary of the term, that is, she never joined or supported any organizations through which women fought to get political rights equal to those of men�(Seyersted). Chopin released ideas into the society in the late 19th century, which the society was not ready to hear. She was what is called a futurist. She had ideas, which reflected the future of the society. In the late 1890s, Kate Chopin, in The Awakening, �The Story of an Hour�, �The Storm�, �An Idle Fellow�, �Athenaise� and �Bayou Folk�, contradicted the traditional view of women and explores the struggle of women with society. Chopin releases new ideas about women through her writing. For example, Chopin discussed �strong-willed, independent heroines who cast a skeptical eye on the institution of marriage� (Hicks 1). Marriage was considered as a sacred institution. Divorce was rare in the 1890s and �if one was to occur, men were automatically given legal control of all property and children� (Hicks 5).
