Hitting �rock bottom� in life relates to the lowest point of the mental, physical, and emotional state a person reaches. �Bottoming out� means life becomes so difficult and unmanageable that there is no other option except to change it. Where bottom actually is, how to know when that point has been reached, and any benefits to be gained from the experience are several aspects related in determining if one has come to that point in life. Looking at situation and character, a clearer answer can be determined for where is bottom? The types of situations that would bring someone to such a realization could be losing a family member, a career, ones health, or ending up homeless or in jail. It is clear that until someone suffers by means of human imperfection, they will not gain wisdom. In �King Lear�, King Lear loses his daughters, his kingdom, is driven to madness, and becomes homeless. It is only until Lear is forced to look at himself and his life that he can begin to gain wisdom.
