Civics Final Exam Stem Cell Research Should our U.S. Government fund stem cell research? The idea behind stem cell research has opened up an ocean of uncertainty and has raised much concern and skepticism. Should our government have a positive influence on the growing interest of stem cell research? Or should scientists continue to fund within themselves? What exactly are stem cells? Stem cells are known as "pluripotent stem cells". These are specialized cells which are formed at the very beginning stages of human embryo development and are part of what is known as a blastocyst. These cells are unique because at this stage in development they are not specialized and have the capacity to develop into 130 different human tissue types. Current research projects have obtained stem cells from tissue which has been removed during terminated pregnancies or from embryos produced by in-vitro fertilization clinics.
